In an article titled “Six Steps to Developing a Fall Protection Plan” Jim Hutter aims to elucidate on the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z359.2 standard titled “Minimum Requirements for a Comprehensive Managed Fall Protection Program”. The ANSI standard Z359.2 mandates a written fall protection program whenever one or more people are routinely exposed to fall hazards and need to be safeguarded with a fall protection system. Although compliance with the ANSI standard is voluntary, it is a well respected source of information for safety officials or anyone involved in safety preparation. In an article from Grainger Industrial News titled “6 Guidelines to Help Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls” six guidelines are outlined to help prevent the all too common workplace occurrence of slips, trips and falls. According to the U.S Department of Labor, slips, trips and falls make up the majority of general industry accidents. These falls account for 15% of all accidental deaths per year. They also make up about 25% of all reported injury claims and more than 95 million lost work days.

The National Safety Council reports “injury facts” in the utility industry that employs around 834,000 people. Throughout 2005, the utility industry reported 7,230 nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses.

I recently read an interesting article with a comedic twist entitled “Top 10 Ways to Get Into Trouble with OSHA” written by James Nash. The Magazine EHS Today polled former OSHA compliance officers, lawyers with OSHA experience, safety managers and consultants to find the best ways to get in trouble with OSHA. I was surprised at how many of these things seemed like common sense safety pitfalls to avoid.

The design and layout of a livestock holding facility is very intricate. Many factors, including safety, are considered when choosing a design. The better the layout, the easier it is on workers to get livestock where they need to go, whether they need to be transported or fed. Many animals are very aware of their surroundings and a wrong angle of a narrow pen can throw off the whole process. Also, one slip can cause panic throughout the whole herd.
