Dangers of Chinese Steel Grating

Based off of a press release submitted by Timothy C. Brightbill and Alan H. Price of Wiley Rein LLP in Washington D.C., United States grating producers are calling for an investigation into Chinese steel grating.  A letter was written by several grating producers to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as well as the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in an effort to alert the organizations of the dangers Chinese steel grating.

Proper Prevention can Reduce Slip and Falls

In “Underestimating Slip and Falls” by Stephen G. Minter, the author discuss slip and fall accidents within the workplace.   According to Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, slips and falls are the second leading cause of workplace injuries and cost nearly $5.7 billion.   Even more alarming, often slip and fall accidents go unreported. According to Steven Di Pilla, a loss control expert with ESIS Inc., this occurs because many people  believe that slip and fall accidents cannot be prevented, therefore they ignore slip and falls and work to prevent injuries and accidents that they feel can be avoided.

Steel Grating on Bridges

Morrison Bridge in Portland, Oregon had been dealing with a number of accidents due to the 50 year old steel grating that existed in the center of the bridge.  The Morrison Bridge is the most-traveled bridge of the six county-owned bridges over the Willamette River and is used by more than 50,000 motorists a day.  Over the years this bridge became worn down and unsafe in certain environments.  Once the steel grating became wet, drivers had to slow down and use extreme caution.  Many drivers complained that even while going 15mph, the bridge was still hazardous.

The High Line Where Slip Resistance Counts

When completed The High Line is a park that will run along a mile and a half stretch of Manhattan’s West Side.  Originally built in the 1930’s for freight trains, the High Line is now owned by the City of New York and operated by New York City’s Parks and Recreation department.  It is a completely elevated park above the streets of New York City.

Preparing for Emergencies

“Plan of Action: Prepare for Emergencies and Evacuations” in Building Services Management discusses the importance of implementing an emergency action plan within the workplace.  Emergency situations in the workplace are a possibility that employers need to take seriously.  According to the article, workplace emergencies are classified as unforeseen situations that can cause physical harm or damage to employees and facilities or the surrounding environment, or cause disruption to the company causing it to shut down temporarily.   Examples of emergencies include: fires, hurricanes, hazardous chemical spills, among others.
