Aluminum treads are one of the many versatile products that SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring offers. Aluminum treads are lightweight, long lasting and may be custom fabricated to meet any job specification. Depending on how much traction your application requires SlipNOT® aluminum stair treads are available in Grade 1 (Fine) and Grade 2 (Medium). Earlier this January, a gentleman was hired to shovel snow in front of a city sanitation garage in New York. He stepped on a piece of steel grating in the sidewalk that allowed ventilation to the No. 1 train below, fell through and landed 10 feet down on the bottom, hitting his head on the way down. Another gentleman who was working with him said the steel floor grating looked like it was in bad shape. Proper maintenance of the grating could have prevented this accident. Steel floor grating needs to be painted or galvanized to protect it from rust and corrosion. If it is not properly protected or bolted down, accidents like this can occur.

Choosing the correct steel floor grating is crucial for heavy vehicular loads and harsh environments. Many large urban buildings such as hospitals incorporate grate systems over their vaults and pits, which are flush level with the sidewalk or road. During the winter of 2003, a skid-steer loader being used to clear a hospitals snowy sidewalk plunged into a vault when the grate system failed under the weight of the loader, resulting in injury for the employee. The loader dropped 20 feet and the employee died an hour after the accident.
