Slip and fall accidents are one of the highest statistics of reported injuries. Researchers found that seafarers have a one-in-11 chance of injuring themselves on a tour of duty. That rate is higher than any other occupation. Many of these ships have outdoor stairways which can lead to falls from high elevations. According to the EHS Today article, “ASSE: The Safety Profession is Growing” by Laura Water, the environmental, health and safety specialist field is rapidly growing to accommodate the needs of many companies. Money magazine lists “environmental, health and safety specialist jobs,” as number 22, “risk-management manager” as number 14 and “environmental engineer” as number 5 on their list of “The 50 Best Jobs in America.” According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of EHS practitioners is expected to increase 9 percent during the years between 2006 and 2016.

Ventnor’s boardwalk near the Atlantic City line has had aluminum planking in place of wood for over 35 years. The aluminum planking has been a success, and has held much longer than most durable wood can survive; due to the exposure to oceanfront rain, snow, salt, sun, and many other harsh elements. Pedestrians just recently began raising concerns about the aluminum surface being slippery while wet. They also were concerned about the electricity to the metal boardwalk, which later was tested and grounded correctly. A city commissioner said the main concern with the boardwalk was safety for the bikers and runners.
