On June 8, 2006 an American Trans Air airplane at LaGuardia Airport, New York en route to Chicago, Illinois sustained substantial damage when a foreign object struck the tail of the airplane during taxi. In most manufacturing facilities aerial work platforms are used to access elevated work areas. When operators and maintenance personnel need to access these work areas for extended amounts of time lifts are used with a platforms supported by scissors, masts or booms. Work platforms tend to be safer than ladders, especially when working at higher elevations for longer periods of time. In order for these platforms to be safe and efficient as possible however, it is critical for users to operate and maintain them according to regulations and manufacturer requirements.

Accidental falls are the leading injury-related visits to the ER. Almost 9 million visits occur each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Home Safety Council (HSC) states that 33 percent of deaths and 40 percent of nonfatal injuries occur within people’s homes. These falls may happen anywhere, anytime. The two age groups which are at highest risk are children under 5 and older adults over 70. Many physicians suggest removing clutter in your home, making sure hallways and staircases are well lit, repairing loose stairway carpeting or boards and adding padding to play areas.

As the American workforce is aging and the “Baby Boomers” are still going strong, the ASSE (American Society of Safety Engineers) suggest businesses should begin thinking about environments and ways of doing a job that help older workers maximize productivity and minimize errors and risks. Even though aging brings on increased risks, older workers generally do not take it easy while they are on the job. Their experience, work ethic and knowledge make them extremely valuable even as they may face additional obstacles as they age.

Stairways are an essential part of large buildings. These stairways, built with metal stairs in some cases, can become slick and oily in certain situations, creating hazardous walking conditions for workers and visitors alike. Creating a safe workplace from blueprints to building is dependent on owners, designers and employers working together to create a safe environment. In order to protect workers and visitors, fall hazards must be thought of and designed out of new buildings in the initial planning stages.
