According to the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), supermarkets and grocery stores pay $450 million in legal settlements each year due to slip and falls. Grocery store slip and falls often occur from spilled liquids, leaks or loose items. They usually take place in crowded entryways where water is being tracked into the store, for example the produce section which is constantly being sprayed down and the refrigerated areas where there may be leaking equipment. In addition to the slick environments, most supermarkets apply high polish to the floors making it hard to detect stray liquids. It’s the supermarkets obligation to provide safer walking areas for employees and customers. By closing off unsafe and slippery areas with cones or having employees point out danger zones to customers, there must be some sort of action taken. If a slip and fall is unavoidable, you must report it to a member of the staff as soon as possible.

With gas prices reaching soaring new heights, more and more people are turning to hybrid and electric vehicles to get them to and from the places they travel to most. Car companies are responding to this growing demand by increasing production of their hybrid and electric vehicles in plants across the nation. Ford recently announced that they are tripling production of electric vehicles which is in turn creating more green jobs in Michigan.

The state of California takes the “green movement” seriously. Over 10 years ago they adopted a Sustainable Building Plan and allocated money to increase sustainable or green building construction throughout the state. Green buildings are designed to use their resources efficiently. They use recycled materials and environmentally sensitive materials in order to improve air quality and preserve the natural outside environment.

A recent article from the Accident Research Center in Melbourne, Australia discusses the importance of retrofitting a safer surface to tractor access platforms. Interviews and inspections were conducted to gather information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of retrofitting and to help reduce the risk of serious injuries associated with farmers mounting and dismounting the tractors.
