Non-slip Tread Stairs Improve Safety for Truck Drivers

A blog posted by Driving Ambition, a professional CDL driver staffer, talks about keeping CDL drivers safe while entering and exiting the trucks.  Slip and falls are the most prevalent cause of truck driver injuries.  It lists does and don’ts for drivers on behavioral standpoints, physical standpoints, and environmental stand points.  Non-slip tread stairs play an important part of keeping drivers safe.

OSHA Ladder Standards Top 10 Most Cited

An article titled “Improving Relationships” by Kyle W. Morrison in Safety + Health magazine examines the relationship between OSHA Region 9 and federal OSHA, as well as other states.  OSHA Region 9 is made up of Hawaii, California, Nevada and Arizona; these states operate their own occupational safety programs.  However, following a series of workplace deaths in Nevada, OSHA reported serious problems with the state’s program.  A federal review of all state plans was then performed.  The results were concerning and prompted working together with other states and federal OSHA to improve workplace safety.

Prevent Slip and Falls by Choosing the Correct Flooring

Slip and fall accidents are repeatedly occurring throughout American businesses on a daily basis; costing a fortune in lost productivity, workers’ compensation insurance and other expenses.  Health care alone costs $37 billion each year.  The high record of slip and falls are considered the number one enemy in the work place; although they are the easiest accident to prevent.  Many businesses take pride in their clean, shiny floors, due to the aesthetic appeal.  But what they don’t realize is that once contaminants are combined with the smooth flooring, accidents are bound to happen. Before choosing flooring for your company you should ask yourself the following:

Accident Prevention with Human Engagement

Is one person always at fault when an accident happens in the work place? A study that will be conducted by Jan Watcher, Ph.D., a professor of safety sciences at Indiana University of Pennsylvania says “No”.  She is out to prove that human error and accident prevention in the workplace can be managed through a variety of mechanisms, and two of those mechanisms may be worker motivation and worker engagement.

Diamond plate and smooth road plates on roadways safe?

Have you even been in a major city where there is tons of road and sidewalk construction and seen steel diamond plate or smooth road plates covering unsafe conditions?  Typically the plates are covering an opening in the roadway for water, sewer, gas electrical, replacement, improvement or new construction trenches.  When placing a diamond or smooth plate on a roadway or sidewalk they need to be secured to the pavement for safety of motorist, bicyclist and pedestrians. If the plates are not secured they could cause serious injury or death.

LEED Certified Parking Facilities Designed with Sustainability in Mind

In recent years, environmentally friendly projects have been the focus of many companies looking to make an impact on the developing green design market.  Companies have been constructing buildings with a focus on sustainability, taking into account everything from planning and site selection to using water, energy and materials in the most efficient ways possible.  Stand alone parking facilities create an open air environment that do not meet the criteria for LEED certification but if it is contained within, connected to or located on the site of a LEED certified project, it may be encompassed within the project boundaries.

More Focus Needed on Workplace Safety News

In 2010, 115 people died from workplace deaths.  This number was far fewer than any previous number recorded by the Indiana Department of Labor since 1991.  These facts were stated in an editorial titled “Number of fatalities in Indiana was at an all-time low last year” on the News-Sentenial.com website about workplace deaths and how they have been decreasing over time but they don’t seem to get any news attention.  Last year only 4,500 people died from workplace related deaths, including deaths related to the explosion off the golf coast last year and other major workplace disasters.  This may seem like a large number but has remained steady or fallen for the last few years.

Non-Slip Bar Grate is Energy Efficient for Food Plants

A few years ago Food Engineering Magazine featured an article entitled “Food Plant of Tomorrow.”  It talked about how food plants are changing in order to meet the demands of the consumer.  Waste management, green building incentives, heftier/safer equipment and a consumer demand for where the food is coming from are all concerns for current food plants and facilities of the future.  I also believe that by making sure product and plant safety is important and integrating safety products such as non-slip bar grate into food plants, worker and consumer confidence will be affected.

Slip and Falls Increase Risk of Parkinson’s

A new study by the scientists at UCLA finds that a moderate traumatic brain injury increases the risk of Parkinson ’s disease later in life.  We aren’t talking about the obvious traumatic injuries that happen in extreme situations like a head injury that would affect a soldier at war, but the head injuries that occur every day from slip and falls, car crashes and football helmets crashing together.
