Benefits of Improving Safety Training

In the article, “Improving Your Safety Training” by Judie Smithers, the author suggests ways to improve safety training within companies.  Smithers suggest that first supervisors become involved in safety training by attending training sessions for employees and following the safety rules themselves.  The author also suggests supervisors include safety evaluations in performance reviews to ensure employees will be performing their work safely.  This enhances the safety training program utilized by companies.

Furthermore, the author suggests that supervisors can enhance safety training by utilizing several more techniques.  First, Smithers suggests that supervisors allow employees to speak at training sessions and share their personal stories about safety at their job.  The author also suggests employees partake in discussions and exercises at training sessions to make sessions more exciting.   Another way to make sessions more interesting is to incorporate demonstrations and practice drills into training sessions, this helps employees become familiar with procedures.  Finally, the author suggests using computers as a method to learn safety procedures.  Utilizing computers allows employees to continue safety training outside of sessions.

In my opinion, Judie Smithers’s article offers insightful improvements to safety training.  These methods help companies take control of the safety of their employees and facilities to help prevent injuries and hazardous areas.   By making a continued effort to make safety training interesting and relevant to employees, supervisors ensure that employees are learning safety procedures and taking ownership in safety programs and will utilize the procedures daily to ensure safety.
