When looking into different types of flooring, you must note the durability, longevity and whether it is easy to maintain and clean.  Today’s specifications now require the flooring to be environmentally friendly or “eco-friendly”.  Food processing plant managers are asking if the flooring is LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), what the VOC (volatile organic compounds) levels are and how safe it is around food and employees.  Different companies who offer eco-friendly flooring products are listed below:

In the food and beverage industry accident prevention is a top priority due to the high volume of ingredients and food items utilized for processing in these plants.  From oils and powder to syrup and water, liquids are a key ingredient to many of the food items processed in manufacturing facilities.  According to an article titled “Falls from Height” on the Health and Safety Executive website, falls form height in the food and beverage industry account for 20% of fatal accidents and are the third highest cause of fatal injury.  In addition, falls from height comprise 80 major injuries a year and 230 over 3-day absences each year.

A few years ago Food Engineering Magazine featured an article entitled “Food Plant of Tomorrow.”  It talked about how food plants are changing in order to meet the demands of the consumer.  Waste management, green building incentives, heftier/safer equipment and a consumer demand for where the food is coming from are all concerns for current food plants and facilities of the future.  I also believe that by making sure product and plant safety is important and integrating safety products such as non-slip bar grate into food plants, worker and consumer confidence will be affected.
