Ineffective Safety Training Programs
According to the article “Is Your Safety Training Program Effective?” by John Rekus, it is extremely important for employers to not only offer safety training programs but test and evaluate employees’ progress after completing training. Often times, Rekus explains that employers show training videos or offer classes to employees on safety training, however, employees are never tested and evaluated on the skills learned during safety training to ensure they can properly execute the information learned. Rekus compares completing safety training programs to completing a driver’s training program; a person would never be able to acquire a drivers license just by watching a video or going to a class, much like an employee should not be expected to understand safety training without utilizing the training in real life applications. Furthermore, in the article, Rekus cites OSHA standards that require employees demonstrate that they can execute how to complete select safety training tasks.
