OSHA Injury Reporting Change

OSHA recently announced a revision to their rule on reporting severe injuries.  The new rule, effective January 1, 2015, states that OSHA must be notified with eight hours if a work related death occurs and within 24 hours if a work related hospitalization, amputation or loss of an eye occurs.   This is a change from the current rule where eye loss, amputation and single worker hospitalization were not included.  Currently if a death occurs or if three or more employees are hospitalized an employer must let OSHA know.

What if an incident occurs and a hospitalization, eye loss, amputation or death aren’t associated with the incident immediately?  Under the revised rule OSHA states that if a fatality occurs within a 30 day window of the work related incident it must be recorded.  However if an eye loss, amputation or hospitalization occurs it must only be reported if it happens within 24 hours of the work related incident.

OSHA’s Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, Dr. David Michaels states that the revised rule will “significantly enhance the agency’s ability to target their resources to save lives and prevent further injury and illness.  They hope that the new data will enable OSHA to identify workplaces where workers are at the greatest risk and be able to target compliance assistance and enforcement resources accordingly.”

OSHA is giving employers three ways to report injuries:
1.)    By telephone to the nearest OSHA Area Office during normal business hours
2.)    By telephone to the 24 hour hotline(1-800-321-OSHA or 1-800-321-6742)
3.)    Or by the new electronic reporting too that OSHA is currently developing on their website

OSHA has developed an easy to read and understand flyer with the new requirements, definition of injuries and reporting information.  This may be a good piece of information to print and hang up for employee reference.
