The Situation:

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has been undergoing extensive renovations to their many lines and stations throughout the city.  Due to the constant heavy traffic and high use, the CTA required products that could withstand the extreme traffic conditions while continually providing a safe and durable surface for visitors and residents.  Several stations throughout the city required galvanized steel floor expansion joint covers on the platforms.  The galvanized steel floor expansion joints needed to act as a liaison between the openings of the small trenches that house the cables below the platforms.

The Solution:

The Chicago Transit Authority hired a leading general contractor to provide a safe, slip resistant and durable steel floor option to be installed in the Southport Station, Diversey Station, Paulina Station and Wellington Station.

The project engineer assigned to this job contacted SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring to determine the finite details about the steel floor expansion joint covers for the stations.  Each of the four (4) stations required customized covers that differentiated from each other.  In total, twenty (20) pieces of steel floor expansion covers were ordered.

The steel floor expansion covers were ordered with the Grade 3 (Coarse) slip resistant coating and were supplied with a hot dipped galvanized finish.  The constant high flow traffic on the steel floor expansion joints required the most abrasive slip resistant coating possible offered by SlipNOT®.  Galvanizing the steel floor expansion joints is a preventative measure to eliminate corrosion and deterioration as well as ensuring longevity.

SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring custom fabricated the steel floor expansion joints for the station platforms with 3/16” diameter holes to allow for easy installation and beveled edges on each side of the steel floor expansion joint covers to prevent any trip hazards.

The Impact:

Residents and travelers throughout the city of Chicago now have an ensured security and sense of safety when utilizing the newly renovated stations.  The SlipNOT® galvanized steel floor expansion joints not only fit with ease into the existing platforms, but instantly created a safe and durable surface for the residents and visitors utilizing the state of the art transportation system.
