The Situation:

Technicians of the leading provider of fire protection and detection products and services were looking for non-slip safety flooring for new walking and working surfaces in their plant.  One particular area that required slip resistant flooring was an area used to conduct fire tests on restaurant equipment such as fryers, griddles and broilers.  During the evaluations, grease and shortening are burned in the appliance and then extinguished with the fire suppression system that they are testing at the time.  The fats, oils and grease drain onto the flooring, creating a slippery surface if not properly drained.  For this reason, the company needed a high traction, slip resistant walking material with drainage capabilities.  The technicians also clean the appliances after each test, creating a greasy water mixture that flows through the grating and into the holding pit.

The Solution:

SlipNOT® sent the technicians various non-slip samples to give a clear idea of the material options available.  After reviewing the samples and information the technicians contacted SlipNOT® to order the material necessary for the application.  SlipNOT® provided the customer with various sized pieces of 19W4 banded steel grating to cover an area 72” x 45”.  Steel grating was an optimal choice for this facility due to a high strength to weight ratio and maximum drainage capabilities.  SlipNOT® gratings are toxic-fume free, fireproof and not susceptible to UV damage.

The Impact:

Tyco Fire Suppression & Building Products makes safety their first priority in all aspects of their corporation.  After the SlipNOT® grating was installed and evaluated, an engineering technician stated, “It is a very greasy environment and the SlipNOT® grating is amazing, even when covered in grease it provides excellent footing!”  He also commented that before installing SlipNOT® the area was like walking on ice.  He conducted recent tests where there was at least ¼” of grease build up on the SlipNOT® grating and the working surface was still not slippery.
