The Situation:
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) recently approved changes to renovate the Center for Health and Sciences (CHS) Parking Structure (E) to accommodate the Outpatient Research and Biomarkers Center. The renovation was a necessity in the existing parking garage because it could not meet the standards for seismic activity and was considered a "Poor" grade. The focus of this renovation was to transform the parking garage into a life safety, seismically safe and accessible structure.
The Solution:
Although it was just a small portion of the overall renovation to the CHS Parking Structure, slip resistant stainless steel stair treads were implemented into the existing stairway. The SlipNOT® stainless steel stair treads were ordered through a local steel fabricator and installer. The steel fabricator worked one-on-one with SlipNOT® to ensure the correct product was ordered. After finalizing the dimensions, SlipNOT® manufactured and produced (9) nine 1/8" x various sized 316L stainless steel stair treads with the unsurpassed stainless steel slip resistant coating applied.
The 316L stainless steel stair treads were ordered to prevent rust and corrosion. Stainless steel is the ideal option for the life safety upgrades in the CHS Parking Structure because of the fire and heat resistance qualities and the aesthetically pleasing appearance it provides. 1/8" stainless steel, the minimum thickness SlipNOT® can offer, was ordered because they were being installed over the existing concrete stairway. Additional support and strength was not required because of the existing concrete.
The Impact:
The stainless steel stair treads were easily installed, instantly creating a safety stairway in the CHS Parking Structure at UCLA. Although the slip resistant stair treads were extremely small portion of the overall renovation, the safety provided is unfathomable.
