Shell’s Brockville Lubricants plant is the largest blender and packager of retail passenger-car motor oils in Canada, and is the newest facility of its type in North America. The Maintenance Coordinator of Shell Canada communicated the need of safety in this facility to SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring. Safety is first priority to Shell Canada, as it is to SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring. The Maintenance Coordinator wanted to elevate the workers off the existing floor that was immersed in oils and other slippery liquids. In order to do that, he was considering using SlipNOT® bar grating as a type of platform.
The Solution:
SlipNOT® quoted Shell several options to fit the needs of the worker platform area. In the end the best option for this application was not bar grating, it was punched aluminum plank. Shell informed SlipNOT® that there would not only be pedestrian traffic on the platform but rolling carts as well. Due to this information, aluminum plank was a superior solution because press locked grating can buckle and cause issues with the rolling of the carts. SlipNOT® supplied Shell with seven (7) pieces of 1” x 36” x 60” aluminum punched plank with the SlipNOT® steel coating. In addition, SlipNOT® provided other various sizes of the aluminum plank with welded anchor blocks for installation. After a great deal of thought and attention to detail, the combination of the lightweight aluminum alloy and the extremely durable surface of the steel coating created a precise material for Shell Canada.
The Impact:
The SlipNOT® steel surface on aluminum plank was installed and used as an elevated work surface that was about an inch off the existing floor. The aluminum plank permitted quick and simple installation. The punched pattern of the aluminum plank allowed oils and liquids to drain through flawlessly. The superior traction of the SlipNOT® steel coating keeps workers on their feet, no matter how slick and oily the environment. The newly constructed platform made of SlipNOT® aluminum plank allowed fork trucks and other motorized equipment to maneuver easily and safely as well.
