The Situation:

Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, IN and has an enrollment of nearly 40,000 students.  The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in over 210 major areas of study.  Recently, Purdue’s Mackey Arena underwent major renovations to update and expand the arena.  Mackey Arena is home to the university’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.  The renovations to Mackey Arena included expanding the concourse areas, increasing the number of concession stands and premium seating, as well as, renovating locker rooms, meeting rooms, lounges and offices.  The project also included constructing sports medicine, practice and training facilities.  To help provide safety, a slip resistant surface was required for stairs in the facility.  The material used needed to be durable and aesthetically pleasing to be incorporated in the upgraded arena design while providing slip resistance against liquids, debris and other elements that may be tracked into the stadium.

The Solution:

SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring was contacted by a steel fabrication company to provide a slip resistant solution for Mackey Arena.  3/16” x 4” x 120” stainless steel nosings were purchased with J-hooks for easy installation on the stadium stairs in the arena.  Stainless steel nosing was chosen because it is extremely durable and long lasting against heavy use.  SlipNOT® stainless steel nosing is also corrosion and chemical resistant allowing it to be easily cleaned.  The stainless steel nosing helped to create a cohesive look for the new designs while providing slip resistance safety.
