The Belk Gymnasium at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, is home to a wide variety of activities, resources, and opportunities. The complex houses basketball, volleyball, badminton, racquetball/squash/walleyball courts, as well as a fitness center, cycling studio, swimming pool, and group fitness studio. The gym has been around since 1970 when it was built to accommodate the few hundred students attending the college. Now, with around 26,000 students enrolled, the gym needed to be brought up to date. Construction began in the summer of 2014 and was completed fall of 2015. The project, in total, added 8,407 feet to the facility!
The Belk Gym website lists six core values that they hold dear: Balance, Fun, Inclusion, Quality, Safety and Student Development. The core value of Safety states that they want to “provide a well-planned environment with a commitment to risk management.” Not only is this important in the workout areas but in the facility as a whole. The faculty took this to heart when they strategized with a local engineering firm. The firm specified SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring products as an aesthetic slip resistant solution that would deter from potential slip and falls. Twenty four (24) Grade 2, ¼” x 3” x 67” stainless steel nosings with countersunk holes were ordered in order to ensure visitor safety on the newly remodeled staircases.
The renovations to the Belk Gymnasium helped increase the number of students, staff, and visitors that can benefit from the facility. New rooms, equipment, classes and increased space greet individuals who come to improve their health or fulfill class assignments. The non slip nosings are providing traction and safety for the rise of foot traffic.
