LB Steel Selects Steel Plate to Provide Worker Safety on Caterpillar Equipment

Caterpillar Machinery with Steel Plate
  • The Situation:

LB Steel is based in Harvey, Illinois with 450,000 square-foot manufacturing facilities that include a machine shop, assembly areas, a separate fabrication facility, and a dedicated burn shop. They have more than 40 state-of-the-art CNC machining centers. They offer a variety of services that will reduce costs and improve quality at LB Steel, which serves as a major outsourcing partner. Previously considered a primarily as a cost-cutting tool, outsourcing is now a vital component to the operating business model in the global marketplace. Customers rely on LBSteel as a trusted partner to outsource large, complex assemblies and higher-volume production.

A manager at LB Steel sought SLIPNOT steel products as a solution for slippery surfaces around the frame of Caterpillar equipment. Slip resistant steel plate were selected to create a suitable amount of traction for workers around the frame.

  • The Solution:

SLIPNOT floor plate can be purchased in steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized steel. Customers can choose to have the surface remain as the mill finish or be painted to their specifications. It can be purchased in stock sized plates and fabricated on site, or it can be custom cut and fabricated for ease of installation upon delivery. For this project, SLIPNOT provided 39 Pieces of various sized 3/16” Grade 3 steel plate in a mill finish. LB Steel had very specific design requirements as the plate would be applied to their equipment; they had the material custom fabricated prior to the application of the SLIPNOT coating. The pieces were used on deck covers, wiring tray covers, a cab side walkway, the rear drill deck cover, and the deck pit.

  • The Impact:

The manager at LB Steel reported that the SLIPNOT steel Grip Plate® improved the traction so workers would not fall, which is precisely why they selected the product, meeting their needs. According to Liberty Mutual, the leading private provider of workers’ compensation insurance in the United States, on-the-job injuries cost employers nearly $1 billion per week in payments to injured employees and their medical care providers. LB Steel was wise to take cost-prevention measures and implement safety solutions before incidents could occur.
