The Situation:

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) needed an alternative solution for the water meter covers being used throughout the City of Los Angeles.  The water meter covers were not meeting the safety and slip resistant standards required by the city.  A manufacturer was hired to supply water meter boxes and water meter covers to the City of Los Angeles.  The water meter boxes and water meter covers needed to comply with regulations set by the City Engineering Department and all components had to be supplied from an approved vendor.

The Solution:

Throughout the entire West Coast, all utilities, including water, are located underground and require occasional access for updating or repair.  The manufacturing company provides many sizes of water meter boxes and water meter covers available and in stock.  Two (2) sizes approved by the City of Los Angeles require water meter covers that are either 15-3/4” wide x 23-1/2” long or 22” wide x 30” long.

The hired manufacturing company frequently works with SlipNOT® in fulfilling the requirements of the water meter covers for the City of Los Angeles.  The water meter covers are ordered in 1/2” thick steel with a LADWP logo imprinted as well as lift holes.  The center of each plate, no matter which size, requires a 6-3/8” diameter cut-out.  This cut-out allows for easy access for checking the water meter.  If additional maintenance is required, the entire water meter cover can easily be removed.

SlipNOT® supplies the water meter covers with a Grade 2 (Medium) slip resistant steel surface in a mill finish.  Once the entire water meter box and water meter box covers are finished, they are coated with a corrosion resistant protection.  The corrosion resistant protection will maintain the quality of the water meter cover and box and ensure a durable, long lasting product.

The Impact:

Water meter boxes and water meter covers supplied to the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power not only are unaffected by moisture and slick additives, they maintain the SlipNOT® slip resistance in all directions.  Water meter boxes and water meter covers provide easy accessibility for employees as well as guaranteed safety for pedestrians.
