How to Specify or Order Steel Grating
NAAMM is the National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers. They develop and distribute manuals, specifications, and other materials used for building construction. When purchasing or specifying steel grating according to NAAMM’s standards, the following should be included:
- Description of Grating: The standard marking system is composed of 5 items:
- Type of grating (welded, riveted, or pressure locked)
- Bearing Bar Spacing
- Cross Bar or Rivet Spacing
- Size of Bearing Bars
- Type of material
- Drawing(s): The drawing(s) must show:
- The dimensions
- Span of the bearing bars
- Method of support
- Any cutouts
- Anchorage: There are various different ways to anchor steel grating into place. The following are a list of the ways to anchor steel grating:
- Welded Anchorage: Welded anchorage is done in the field. The steel grating is welded into place, making the grating permanent in that location.
- Saddle Clips: Saddle clips are used when steel grating is installed with the possibility of being removed at a later time. You can purchase saddle clips from a grating manufacturer.
- Weld Lugs: Weld lugs are also used when steel grating is installed with the possibility of being removed at a later time. Weld lugs are shop welded to bearing bars and they have to be specified when ordering the steel grating.
- Other: Other types of anchorage that have been tested and approved for use with steel grating may be used. Included are top-mounting mechanical friction anchors which allow you to install them without accessing the grating from below. These types of anchors can be removed and are recommended if the steel grating will be removed frequently.
- Finish: Steel grating can come in three different finish types, mill, painted, or galvanized. When specifying steel grating, you must think about the application in which it will be used. If steel grating is in an environment where it is exposed to moisture, it must be protected from rust or corrosion by either painting or galvanizing.
