San Diego Gas & Electric Made SlipNOT® Slip Resistant Parkway Hatch Covers the Standard

    LOCATION
    San Diego, CA

    INDUSTRY
    Utilities

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
    Hatch covers for pedestrian walkways

    SOLUTION
Grade 2 galvanized steel customer supplied hatch covers

    WEBSITE

    The Situation:

A few years ago, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) needed to address the standard they had for parkway hatch covers. SDG&E was struggling with the existing slip resistant bare galvanized steel diamond plate material that was being implemented into pedestrian parkway hatch covers.

    The Solution:

Bare diamond plate was the slip resistant standard for San Diego Gas and Electric for many years, but after much frustration and concern for public safety, bare diamond plate had to be discontinued from being installed on the pedestrian parkway hatch cover applications.  San Diego Gas and Electric found that the bare diamond plate could not maintain its slip resistant qualities in any wet or greasy conditions.

SDG&E set out to find a new slip resistant product to replace the failing bare diamond plate that could meet a specific coefficient of friction (COF) and maintain the COF after many years of use.  SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring products met and exceeded the criteria for COF required by San Diego Gas & Electric.  SDG&E wanted to exceed the minimum standards set by Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 0.6 for flat surfaces.  San Diego Gas & Electric set the standard for the new hatch cover at 0.65 minimum for flat surfaces.  SlipNOT® products have a COF of at least 0.98, well above the SDG&E standard.

SDG&E has now been installing SlipNOT® Grade 2 galvanized steel parkway hatch covers for several years since the transition away from bare diamond plate.  The SlipNOT® parkway hatch covers are purchased through one of San Diego Gas & Electric’s main suppliers, where the hatch cover is then finalized and shipped to SDG&E for installation.  The parkway hatch cover is custom fabricated to the specifications of SDG&E with lifting handles, hand holes and the company’s logo integrated into the parkway cover before being shipped.

    The Impact:

Since the transition from bare diamond plate to SlipNOT® safety plate, San Diego Gas & Electric has found that SlipNOT® maintains the coefficient of friction required for the pedestrian parkway hatch cover standard, even in wet or greasy areas.  San Diego Gas & Electric has always set high standards for public safety and SlipNOT® slip resistant hatch covers have always provided a safe and secure walking surface which allows the public to walk with confidence.

Duquesne Light Company Installs SlipNOT® Steel Plates as a Safety Retrofit for High Traffic Loading Ramp

    LOCATION
    Pittsburgh, PA

    INDUSTRY
    Utilities

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
Retrofitting over slippery bare diamond plate ramps

    SOLUTION
A-36 steel plates with 3/8" plug weld holes

    WEBSITE

    The Situation:

In early January 2009 Duquesne Light, energy provider of nearly a half million customers in Southwestern Pennsylvania, contacted SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring because of an extremely slippery loading ramp at their facility. The existing ramp consisting of slick bare tread plate caused several “close calls.” Duquesne Light wanted to prevent any close calls from becoming a dangerous reality. The four pieces of slick bare diamond plate were installed at the bottom of a high traffic pitched loading ramp where water gathered causing a dangerous walking surface, a workplace safety hazard.

    The Solution:

Duquesne Light, the leader in the Transmission and Distribution of Electric Energy in Pennsylvania and a Sales Associate of SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring worked together to find an effective safety solution for their loading ramp. The preliminary option was to send the four pieces of slippery bare tread plate to SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring to apply their molten metal steel slip resistant surface. This would eliminate down time and guarantee uninterrupted access to the loading ramp. Upon further evaluation Duquesne Light and SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring determined that the best solution for their application would be to cut four custom pieces of A-36 Carbon Steel Plates to act as cover plates for their slippery tread plates. The cover plates were provided with 3/8” plug weld hole for easy installation on site.

    The Impact:

Not only did the non slip steel plates retrofit snuggly to their existing slippery loading ramp made up of bare diamond plate, they also are providing extreme workplace safety and durability. The custom cover plates were easily installed and are eliminating the close calls occurring where the water gathered at the bottom of the loading ramp.
