    Situation:

    The Chicago Park District is one of the largest public park managers in the nation. They have infinite enjoyable activities; from canoeing to batting cages to arts and crafts, the Chicago Park District will not disappoint.  One of the most important and expensive projects for the City of Chicago, is Millennium Park.  This public park is located in the loop community area of Chicago.  One of the most famous pieces is The Bean, which attracts hundreds of tourists for photo ops.  Millennium Park is also host to a variety of key social events such as, Grant Park Music Festival and has made its debut in many Hollywood films and television shows.

    Due to the climate variations of Chicago, the walkway along Columbus Drive had developed gaps within the concrete. Various attractions are walking distance from the walkway, leading to heavy foot traffic and wear.  Gaps may cause a tripping hazard for the city’s pedestrians.  A well known bridge construction company  needed to find a suitable thermal expansion joint cover that was durable, corrosion resistant and slip resistant.

    Solution:

    The owner contacted SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring to inquire about non slip expansion joint covers. SlipNOT® provided custom cut 3/16” x 12” x 96” Grade 2 304  stainless steel expansion joint covers that had 7/16” countersunk holes and were beveled, for a smoother transition to the concrete.  The installed expansion joint covers were versatile and removable for easy access.

    Impact:

    The construction company as well as the City of Chicago, were highly satisfied with the expansion joint covers. The high traffic area is now safely utilized reducing the amount of slips, trips and falls.  The construction company enjoyed their experience with SlipNOT® and plan to order additional expansion joints in the future.

    Aluminum Expansion Joint Covers Installed on Walkway at Dallas Arboretum

    The Situation:

    The Dallas Arboretum is a beautiful outdoor attraction in Dallas, with 66 acres of seasonal flowers, shrubbery, trees, many different plants and White Rock Lake.  The 66 acres on the lake provides a complete life science laboratory for children to learn and holds many different outdoor festivals, concerts, art shows and indoor and outdoor restaurants overlooking downtown Dallas.  The Dallas Arboretum was listed among the top three arboretums in the nation in Southwest Spirit Magazine.

    The pedestrian walkways throughout the botanical gardens needed an expansion joint cover to bridge the gap between the walkways.  The expansion joint cover moves with the walkways if they expand or contract due to varying climates.

    The Solution:

    The Dallas Arboretum contacted a metal manufacturer who recommended SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring.  SlipNOT® provided 1/8” x 14” x 120” Grade 2 aluminum on aluminum expansion joint covers which were installed on the walkways throughout the gardens and beside the lake.  SlipNOT® suggested aluminum because of its lightweight, durable and corrosion resistant properties.  Since this was an exterior application, the slip resistant coating provided a high traction surface under any weather condition.

    The Impact:

    The Situation:

    A bridge just North of Virginia Parkway, located on Ridge Road, was in need of repair.  The Southbound Outside Rail Bridge at Normandy Creek was in need of a solution to slippery walking surfaces on expansion joints.  The bridge is undergoing a deck demolition and rehabilitation to meet safety standards.

    The Solution:

    The Street Superintendent of the Texas DOT contacted SlipNOT® in regards to the bridge for more information.  After sending over detailed drawings of the project and speaking with a SlipNOT® sales representative the Superintendent was confident in utilizing SlipNOT® for the project.  SlipNOT® has been utilized for various projects in Texas, specifically expansion joint cover applications. After cohering in regards to the renovation, the steel Grade 2 galvanized covers were manufactured to specifications with countersunk holes, beveled edges, 1” x 1” chamfers and a ¼” center crown.

    The Impact:

    Texas DOT specifies SlipNOT® expansion joint covers due to the permanent solution they produce. The fabricator hired for this project stated “The SlipNOT®T items you provided are an essential part of a required solution in order to pass final inspection.”  With safety in mind the Texas DOT is able to install the non slip expansion joint covers without worry of replacement or maintenance.  Pedestrian and motorized traffic using the bridge will now have traction on expansion joints.

    Slip Resistant Galvanized Steel Expansion Joints Create a Permanent Slip Resistant Solution for FDOT’s Walkway

    The Situation:

    A leading General Contracting, Civil Construction, Construction Management and Design Build Contracting company was directed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) via the CEI Engineer to design, manufacture and install expansion joint plates that met the criteria specified per Standard Index 21110.  The plate was not required in the original plan, nor was it required by the ADA guideline.  FDOT requested the slip resistant plate as an added safety measure.

    The Solution:

    An engineering firm designed the plates at the general contractor's request.  The plates were designed according to specifications and quotes were requested from various manufacturers.  SlipNOT® steel plate was chosen for the project and shop drawings were produced and approved by FDOT.  SlipNOT® provided 1/4” x 15” x 108” A572-50 steel plates for the project.  By forming the plates to exact drawings, the general contractor and FDOT could easily install the finished product without having to worry about further fabrication in the field.

    Since the plates were going to be used for expansion joints, the steel would have to be galvanized or painted to protect against rust and corrosion.  Ultimately, FDOT  decided to galvanize the expansion joints.  SlipNOT® galvanized products are durable, rust and corrosion resistant and have an unmatched surface hardness.

    Galvanized Steel Grip Plate® Installed as Expansion Joint Cover for FDOT

    The Situation:

    The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) contacted a worldwide designer, supplier, and manufacturer of engineered products for an application they needed completed.  As a long time client of the supplier, FDOT asked the company to find a slip resistant product that would work for their needs.  FDOT needed a non slip and corrosion resistant surface to use on expansion joint covers.

    The Solution:

    FDOT's supplier contacted SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring for a non-slip steel expansion plateSlipNOT® provided 1/4” x 15” x 97 1/2” Grade 2 steel plates with 7/16” countersunk holes.  Steel expansion plates can become extremely slippery under wet conditions, which is why a Grade 2 (Medium) SlipNOT® coating was applied.  This provided maximum traction and durability.  The steel expansion joints were also supplied with a hot dipped galvanized finish which was a preventative measure to eliminate corrosion and deterioration.

    A steel expansion joint is a metal top plate used to bridge between two concrete slabs.  Throughout hot and cold weather, concrete may expand and contract, creating cracks and failure.  The steel expansion plate is anchored to one slab of concrete allowing for the steel expansion plate to move with the concrete.

    The Impact:

    SlipNOT®’s galvanized steel expansion plates were custom fabricated to meet the needs of the Florida Department of Transportation, providing a slip resistant walking surface.

    Stainless Steel Plates Protect Expansion Joints in Honolulu Parking Deck

    The Situation:

    Honolulu, Hawaii is exposed to many of nature’s different elements.  Honolulu’s nickname is “The Gathering Place”, which fits a city in which hundreds of visitors from around the world flock to the numerous beaches and attractions.  This constant flow of visitors means safety is a top priority to Honolulu businesses.  SlipNOT® was contacted by a fabricator who has been in the contracting business since 1987, to help with a parking deck project for a commercial client.  The fabricator wanted to purchase stainless steel slip resistant plates to fit over existing expansion joints in the parking deck.

    The Solution:

    SlipNOT® provided the client with 1/8” thick 12” x 84” stainless steel plates for their installation.  The fabricator waterproofed the expansion joints and then installed the stainless steel plates over them, which allowed for slip resistance as well as protection of the expansion joints.  SlipNOT® stainless steel has a file hard surface and is also corrosion resistant, which will stand up to the Hawaiian environment.

    The Impact:

    SlipNOT® provided the most effective way for the customer to keep the expansion joints protected, while maintaining a slip resistant surface.  The stainless steel Grip Plate® has proven to be durable and long lasting in tough and exposed environments.  The president of the company stated “The plates are working good.  Your product is a great one.”

    Stainless Steel Expansion Joint Covers Installed on Pedestrian Bridge Leading to Sea-Tac Airport

    The Situation:

    Sea-Tac Airport required expansion joints for their pedestrian bridge to provide complete slip resistance and safety in all directions as well as providing durability for the high traffic area.  Sea-Tac needed a product that could withstand the heavy usage of constant foot traffic and luggage being rolled over the covers.

    The Solution:

    SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring applies a slip resistant coating to metal substrates through a one-of-a kind plasma deposition process.  The all metal slip resistant surface is applied to the metal substrates with at least 4,000 psi creating a file hard slip resistant surface between 55-63 on the Rockwell “C” scale.

    The outside manufacturer on expansion joints involved on this project had utilized SlipNOT® products for several applications nationwide and knew that the SlipNOT® coating could withstand all of the demanding requirements set by Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle, WA.  A sales representative from SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring was contacted by this manufacturer to arrange the coating of stainless steel expansion joint coversSlipNOT® was supplied with pieces of 1/4” x 16” x various lengthed expansion joint covers to have the Grade 2 stainless steel slip resistant coating applied to them.

    The expansion joint covers were received and the file hard slip resistant coating was applied to them quicker than the projected lead time quoted.  The covers were then shipped back to the manufacturer to be installed on the pedestrian bridge.

    The Impact:

    SlipNOT® was the perfect answer for the requirements set by Sea-Tac Airport for the pedestrian bridge.  The expansion joint covers installed with ease and have proven to be safe and durable, even in the high foot and luggage traffic.  The file hard non-slip surface ensures safety for years to come, because it will not flake or wear smooth, while providing a aesthetically pleasing appearance.

    Walkways Retrofitted with Non-Slip Galvanized Steel Plates at UTSA

    The Situation:

    University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) hired a local construction company to find a slip resistant solution for an existing walkway from the classrooms to the parking garage.  UTSA is a comprehensive, four-year public university serving the San Antonio metropolitan area, South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.  UTSA was concerned with slips, trips and falls occurring in the walkway and they wanted to take preventative measures to eliminate any possibilities of this occurring.

    The Solution:

    The construction company presented SlipNOT® Metal Safety Flooring with a detailed drawing of the material needed to retrofit / cover the slippery area at the University of Texas at San Antonio.  The drawing called for galvanized steel custom cut to 26-3/4” x 138” x 1/4” with (24) 1/4” countersunk holes for installation to the existing concrete.

    Countersunk holes are just one of many mounting options that can be offered with SlipNOT® material.  This is the ideal and easiest way to install slip resistant metal flooring products to concrete.  The only requirements for this method of installation is pre-drilling the concrete and attaching the plate in place with flathead screws. SlipNOT® material can also be welded in place whether it is tack welding, seam welding or plug hole welding.

    The SlipNOT® galvanized steel slip resistant cover plate was chosen not only because it is a file hard, long lasting non-slip product, it will also easily maintain its slip resistance in all weather and pedestrian traffic extremes.

    The Impact:
