Ford Engine and Fuel Tank Plant installs SlipNOT® Steel Stair Treads

    LOCATION
    Dearborn, MI

    INDUSTRY
    Manufacturing

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
Steel stair treads installed on existing stairways

    SOLUTION
1/8” x various sized stair treads formed with 1 ½” nosings

    WEBSITE

    The Situation:

The Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Engine and Fuel Tank plant, located in Dearborn, MI, first  started production in 1941.  Currently over 600 employees work on I4 Engine’s and steel fuel tanks in over 2 million square feet of manufacturing space.   An area in the Ford plant where engine blocks are produced an oil mist forms in the air and settles over stairways that are utilized by Ford employees daily to access machinery, piping equipment and electrical lines.  Comprised of smooth steel bar grating treads, these stairways become slick with oil and other lubricants that are tracked through the plant by workers and from the machining process.  Employees report these slippery conditions to maintenance who in turn looks for a solution before accidents occur.  Ford Motor Company turned to SlipNOT® to provide slip resistant stair treads to elminitate the slick stairways in the Dearborn Engine and Fuel Tank plant.

    The Solution:

The Manufacturing Maintenance Planning Specialist knew of SlipNOT® perforated plate installed in another area of a Ford Plant.  He took measurements of the existing stair treads in the facility and then passed on to SlipNOT® sales representatives who created shop drawings based on the specifications.  Steel stair treads were ordered in various sizes from 1/8” steel material formed with 1 ½” nosings with the grade 2 SlipNOT® surface applied.  Each tread was then painted black.

Steel was chosen for this application because the oil mist in the air served as a rust inhibitor and it was the most cost effective choice.  By applying a slip resistant coating to the treads, the Ford Motor Company can count on the non-slip surface to solve the slick stairway problem before a serious slip and fall accident can occur.

    The Impact:

The Ford Motor Company issued two purchase orders for material to be used in the Dearborn Engine and Fuel Tank plant.  The first order of 177 stair treads was issued in March 2011 and the second for 129 treads was issued in August 2011.  The durable surface of the SlipNOT® steel stair treads will last for years to come and keep the employees of the Dearborn Engine and Fuel Tank plant on their feet, reducing potential slip and fall accidents on these stairways and increasing safety.

    INDUSTRY
    Food and Beverage

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
SlipNOT® galvanized steel grating and stair treads based on customer supplied drawings

    SOLUTION
Custom cut galvanized steel plate and grating

    WEBSITE

    The Situation:

The Coca-Cola Company has come a long way since selling its original fountain beverage for 5 cents a glass in 1886.  Now, with bottling being done by over 300 facilities all over the world, the Coca-Cola Company has grown into one of the most recognized brands to date.  An outside contractor that has done previous work for the Atlanta Coca-Cola plant with SlipNOT®, contacted their sales representative to provide a non-slip solution for their packer platform line..

    The Solution:

The contractor provided specific drawings of the pieces needed for the packer platform line.  19W4 Steel grating coated with the grade 2 steel surface was chosen for the platform.  The pieces were cut to size based on the drawings and were able to be easily installed in the field.  Stair treads formed from steel plate were also utilized for the packer platform line.  The treads were cut based on the specifications listed on each drawing, with two ½” diameter through holes that would be utilized during installation.  The stair treads and grating were all galvanized after the slip resistant surface was applied.  The galvanizing process allows for the steel surface to be protected against rust and corrosion.

The 19W4 spacing of the grating allows for liquid and other debris to fall through below.  The SlipNOT® non-slip coating created a completely 100% slip resistance surface in all directions, providing safety and security for anyone working on the platform

    The Impact:

The Coca-Cola Company continues to rely on SlipNOT® products for the many projects in their facilities.  Coca-Cola and the outside contractor can continue to rely on SlipNOT® products to help prevent slip and fall accidents in their bottling facilities.  The galvanized treads and grating will provide a high traction surface that will last for years to come.

FedEx Memphis Hub Installs Galvanized Stair Treads for Semi-Enclosed Stairway

    LOCATION
    Memphis, TN

    INDUSTRY
    General

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
    Stair treads for semi-enclosed stairways

    SOLUTION
Customer supplied ¼” steel stair treads with Grade 3 SlipNOT® coating applied

    WEBSITE

    The Situation:

Federal Express was originally founded in 1971 and is based on an idea from a college paper written by the founder.  FDX Corporation was created with the acquisition of Caliber Systems Inc. in 1998 and in 2000, the name of the company was changed to FedEX Corporation.   Over 8.5 million packages are shipped express, ground, freight and expedited delivery daily with FedEx.  FedEX’s Memphis hub has over 8,000 people access their stairways on a daily basis.  When designing new semi enclosed stairways for the hub, Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects contacted a fabricator to fabricate stair treads based on the drawings they provided.  Together, the fabricator and Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects decided slip resistance was a must in the area where all different environments may be present.

    The Solution:

A SlipNOT® sales representative worked closely with the fabricator and architect to determine what product best fit the needs of the FedEx hub.  The fabricator manufactured ¼” steel stair treads based on the drawings provided and sent them to SlipNOT® for the non-slip coating to be applied.  SlipNOT® applied the patented steel surface to each stair tread, creating a 100% slip resistant surface in all directions.  Since the treads were located in a semi-enclosed stairway exposed to outside elements and power washing for cleaning, they were galvanized to prevent rust and corrosion. Steel products can either be painted or galvanized to prevent rust and corrosion when installed in areas where moisture is prevalent.

The Grade 3 steel surface was chosen due to the high amount of traffic volume passing through the stairways.  Steel Grade 3 is used in the most demanding environments and provides traction when completely coated in water, oils or other lubricants.  SlipNOT® steel has a bond strength of at least 4,000 psi and a surface hardness between 55 – 63 on the Rockwell “C” scale.

    The Impact:

SlipNOT® shipped the coated stair treads back to the fabricator for installation.  The treads were installed at the hub with a vertical 8 foot plate to reinforce them from below.  The 8,000 people who pass through the FedEx hub each day can rely on SlipNOT® coated stair treads to keep them on their feet in any environment.
