Galvanized Steel Plate and Stair Treads Installed at Vermont Electric Power Company

The Situation:

Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) began in 1956, creating the nation’s first statewide transmission only company. VELCO currently manages 732 miles of transmission lines, 53 substations, 13,000 acres of rights-of-way, fiber optic communication networks and equipment that enables interconnected operations. VELCO is now the country’s fastest growing transmission company, ensuring continued access to reliable, climate friendly power technology. While providing preeminent service, VELCO also focuses on employee safety. A facilities supervisor contacted SlipNOT® in regards to their existing slippery grating stair treads and platform. The supervisor said due to a change of use in the area, the staircase became a safety concern.

The Solution:

Once VELCO gave SlipNOT® the staircase and platform specifications, SlipNOT® provided 3/16” x 12” x 36-3/8” Grade 2 galvanized steel stair treads and a 3/16” x 41-3/4” x 60” Grade 2 galvanized steel plate. Galvanized steel is durable, corrosion resistant and has a bond strength of at least 4,000 psi and a surface hardness between 55 – 63 on the Rockwell “C” scale. The galvanized steel products were easily tack welded to the existing grating treads, which was accomplished in no time.

The National Safety Council reports that slips and falls are the leading cause of death in the workplace and the cause of more than 20 percent of all disabling injuries. Knowing this fact encourages installation of slip resistant flooring products.

The Impact:

SlipNOT® exceeded the expectations of VELCO. Once the galvanized steel plate stair treads and plate were installed, VELCO no longer had a safety concern. Employees were more productive knowing they have a slip resistant surface rather than bar grating and now have high traction in all directions.
