Safety and Sanity During Social Distancing

April 24, 2020

Social distancing has redesigned our workplaces, our shopping habits, our travel abilities, and our lifestyles in general.  While we are all adjusting to different rules and different ways of living our lives, there are some important things to remember in order to remain “safe and sane” during this changing time.

An article published in Safety and Health Magazine just last month gives many good tips on how to remain grounded, safe, and functional during social distancing.

  • Do not completely isolate yourself from others: Communicating through phone calls, texting, and video chatting are important ways to keep some form of social interaction going. This is not only important for adults, but for children too.  Keep them talking to friends!
  • Check in on your contacts: This is a great time to reach out to friends and family to check on their well-being. Calling to talk but also making sure everyone is doing ok is a great way to stay connected.
  • Help others: Consider providing help for those who are at risk or are marginalized. Helping a neighbor by dropping off groceries or donating to a local food shelter are just two ways you can help someone else.
  • Try a new or alternative activity to keep your body and mind active: Puzzles, board games, trying new recipes, taking virtual a tour of a place you’ve always wanted to visit, or taking an online art class are all good ways to keep yourself going and giving yourself something to look forward to.
  • Do your best to maintain a routine: Try to keep normal sleep patterns, eating times, working hours, and relaxing times.
  • Exercise or go for a walk: Even taking a 15 minute break to take a short walk outside can help clear your mind and reset your mood. Regular exercise also may help keep anxiety at bay.

These are only a few of the ideas that the article mentions.  It is a helpful list that is beneficial to any reader needing help during this unpredictable time.  Take a look for not only your benefit, but for the benefit of any loved ones around you.
